Lighting is an essential part of greenhouse floriculture, but it does cost a lot of energy. In order to significantly reduce our energy consumption, we have started investing in LED lighting.
In the past, we used 150W lamps, which used up 450,000 KWH on a yearly basis. After that, we used 32W ‘energy savers’, which, though a good step forward, are no match for the 13W LED lamps we are now transitioning to.
Once the transition is complete, we will have reduced our annual consumption to 40,000 KWH, representing more than a tenfold reduction compared to the past. It has required significant investment, but we hope to have earned back the invested funds within 4-5 years.
